My name is Moira Lavelle, and I’m a journalist based in Athens, Greece. I have reported on politics, migration, borders, and gender for international outlets such as The Sunday Times, NPR, The Independent, Al Jazeera, Inside Climate News, Vice, AFP, Rest of World, Inkstick Media, Jacobin, and The World, as well as the Greek outlet Solomon. I have been interviewed live on several BBC radio programs, as well a Your Call on San Francisco’s KALW, and Al Jazeera’s The Take.

I previously worked as Senior Editor and Features Writer at the Greek paper ΤΟ ΒΗΜΑ.  There, I launched and hosted the weekly news podcast Explaining Greece, covering topics from the archaeology of Athens to the minutiae of housing legislation.

In 2023 I was on a team that won a Local Cross-border Journalism Grant funded by Journalismfund Europe for an investigation into EU and specifically Greek asylum services. Also in 2023 I won an investigative reporting grant from Solomon news organization for four-month investigation into issues related to food systems in Greece.

I have a M.S. from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and B.A. from Tufts University.
